VALUES
Values are an important part of
any organization, but they are especially important for churches.
Values define why we do what we do. They are not: principles,
strategies, or doctrinal statements; they are constant, passionate
convictions that provide the foundation for our: identity, culture,
faith, and behavior.
Values: determine our
distinctiveness, communicate what we believe is important, help us
to embrace positive change, influence our overall behavior, inspire
us to action, shape our characters, keep us focused, help us to
evaluate our progress, and provide a foundation for a vision of who
we are, and what we are supposed to do in the Kingdom of God as a
specific Body of Christ. |

OUR CORE
VALUES
During the spring of 2005 our church leaders, pastors, and staff
gathered in a retreat to discern God’s will and purpose for
SPUMC. From this retreat came our SPUMC Core Values:
Connecting, Trusting, Striving and
Sharing. We feel that these
4 values, based in Scripture, will guide who we are and what we do ...
as individual disciples and as a church together.
They will allow us
to focus our ministry so that we can be assured that we are
continuing to grow spiritually and are serving effectively in God’s
kingdom.

VISION
A vision is a picture of the
future that God has planned for us; a snapshot, revealed to us as we
pray, listen, and explore our situation. “It is accomplished by His
power, and we do it for His glory.” (Jackson, 2003, p. 25)
A vision is different than a
Mission. Vision determines our direction; mission reflects the work
that needs to be done in order to live our values and live into our
vision.

OUR VISION
STATEMENT
In the spring of 2006, at a second retreat, these core values
were used as a basis for formulating our vision statement.
During this retreat, the Holy Spirit inspired us with the words
which we all now know as our Vision Statement,
“Igniting
Lives With Jesus Christ to Make a Difference”.
