The Mission Committee is excited to announce a brand new "Meal Ministry" called Heaven's Kitchen. Starting in April, 2011, we will be providing a hot meal to guests at Brooklyn Community UMC once a month.  BCUMC already provides meals for the surrounding community several times a week. They have graciously offered SPUMC use of their facilities to expand their ministry. The church is located near the Baltimore City line. A "Title One" elementary school sits less than a block away. 80% of the students at this school receive free or reduced lunches. A mile and a half from the church is a "tent city" community of chronicly homeless folks. As you can see, there is a lot of need in this part of Anne Arundel County and we have been moved to help meet this need.

Heaven's Kitchen takes place the fourth Saturday of each month. We feed 30 - 100 people each time and serve from 12 noon until 2 pm. Volunteers are needed to cook, set up, serve and clean up. We also offer other services such as blood pressure screenings and give-aways such as toiletries, food, books and clothing. There are opportunities for small groups or families to take part. Scouts and Sunday School classes can help by making decorations or contributing desserts.

  1. Volunteer - 25 volunteers are needed on the 4th Saturday of each month. Meet at SPUMC at 9:30 am or at Brooklyn Community UMC at 10.  Set up and cooking from 10 – 12.

  2. Bake – cookies, brownies, whatever you like to make. Please put items in Ziploc bags and deliver to the church before the 4th Saturday.

  3. Decorate – this is a great opportunity for kids. Table decorations, placemats and any other seasonal decorations are greatly appreciated.

  4. Nurses – take blood pressures.

  5. Serve - food, help distribute clothing, help at the peanut butter and jelly table, help at the toiletries and the devotional books tables.

  6. Donate – Heaven's Kitchen has on ongoing need for new and used clothing, blankets and sleeping bags, new socks and underwear, toilet paper, toiletries and devotional books. Our guests also appreciate homemade baked goods (portioned in zip loc bags). There are Heaven's Kitchen donation baskets in Fellowship Hall in the Missions area.   See Current Events page for current needs.

  7. Pray for those who are homeless and live on the margins of society that we can not only meet some of their physical needs but that we can also feed their souls.
