“Remember your baptism and be thankful.” – United Methodist Baptismal Liturgy
At Severna Park United Methodist Church, baptism is a sacred and joyful celebration—a sign of God’s grace and a welcome into the family of faith. Whether it's a tiny infant, a growing child, a teen, or an adult, baptism marks the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ.
In the United Methodist tradition, baptism is a sacrament—an outward and visible sign of God’s inward and spiritual grace. We believe:
Baptism is an act of God, not of human merit.
It is open to people of all ages, from infants to adults.
It initiates us into Christ’s holy church and connects us to the global Christian community.
Baptism happens once in a person’s life and does not need to be repeated.
We joyfully celebrate baptisms during regular Sunday worship services, where the whole church community can witness, affirm, and support the person being baptized.
For infants and young children, baptism represents God’s grace already at work in their lives. Parents and sponsors (often called godparents) make a commitment to raise the child in the Christian faith, and the church promises to help guide and nurture them as they grow.
Youth and adults who have not been baptized may choose to receive the sacrament as a public expression of their faith. This often follows a time of preparation and learning, sometimes through confirmation classes or meetings with a pastor.
If you are considering baptism for yourself or a member of your family, we would be honored to walk with you on this journey. Please contact one of our pastors or fill out the Baptism Inquiry Form so we can talk more about your hopes and next steps.
We look forward to celebrating with you and welcoming you into the grace-filled waters of baptism.
